THE ULTIMATE RIDER'S NEWS

Building the Future: Training the Groms of Batukaras

Gabriela had the opportunity to spend a full day in Batukaras working with one of the most inspiring groups of young surfers we’ve seen in a long time. What began as a simple training session quickly turned into something much bigger — a powerful reminder of why youth development matters and how strong a motivated surf community can be.

From the moment she arrived, Gabriela could feel it: curiosity, respect, and pure stoke. These groms didn’t come just to “try” a session. They showed up ready to learn, ready to sweat, and ready to push themselves beyond what they thought was possible.

Training Beyond the Surfboard

During the session, Gabriela focused on the physical foundations every high-level surfer needs: strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and body control. These are the same core principles used when working with the Indonesian National Surfing Team, carefully adapted to the groms’ age and stage of development.

What impressed Gabi most wasn’t only their physical ability, but their mindset. The groms listened closely, applied corrections immediately, and supported one another through every challenge. That attitude can’t be forced — it comes from passion and the right environment.

Strength & Conditioning, as Gabriela emphasized, isn’t about lifting heavier or training harder than everyone else. It’s about moving better, staying healthy, and building confidence, both in and out of the water. The groms understood this quickly and embraced the process.

A Community That Creates Champions

Batukaras is special. You can feel it in the way the kids interact, in their respect for the ocean, and in the pride they carry for their home break. Surfing here goes beyond sport — it’s a way of life.

That’s why working with these groms felt so natural. They already have something that can’t be taught in a gym: a deep connection to the ocean. Gabriela’s role was simply to help support that connection with strong bodies and resilient minds.

At the end of the session, she shared what she truly felt:

“Full stoke to meet and train with you, groms — real legends.”

Looking Ahead: What’s Coming Next Year

This session was not a one-off moment — it was the beginning of something bigger.

We’re already working on new projects for next year, focused on long-term athlete development. The vision includes more structured Strength & Conditioning programs, education around injury prevention, surf-specific movement training, and future collaborations that will give these groms access to higher-level knowledge and support.

The goal is not to rush results, but to build strong surfers step by step — physically, mentally, and emotionally. With the right guidance early on, young athletes stay healthier, surf longer, and enjoy the journey more.

The potential in Batukaras is massive, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.

Groms Are the Future

Every generation shapes the next one. These kids are not only future competitors — they are future role models, coaches, and leaders of Indonesian surfing.

If we invest in them now, if we provide structure, education, and belief, they will carry surfing forward with integrity, strength, and pride. Sessions like this remind us that the future is already here — it just needs support.

Thank you to everyone who made this day possible, and especially to the groms who gave everything they had.Keep dreaming. Keep training. Keep smiling.
